Entries from the Old Guest Book and Site Correspondence

Well cousins this is it! The definitive collection of the old guest book, and to the best of my knowledge - all the site correspondence I've received to date. If you don't see your note let me know. There is a ton of info here lots of good family info, check the entries - I know someone will find a missing cousin. I am thinking of putting a search engine on the site. Anybody have any ideas?

Due to popular demand this is the URL for Cavan net - The web site of County Cavan, it is a good source for a lot of info regarding Cavan, history, Family names, Favorite son General Phil Sheridan of Civil war and Indian wars fame, as well as McGoverns.

It's nice to know there are so many of us out there! The McGoverns of South Louisiana are quite a riot. Hope the rest of the clan is the same.

Well Colleen, we do try to have our fun up here in NY too, and have been known to be partysome at times - what times? All times! Are you related to Carey? ___________________________________________________________

James Francis McGovern j1965@hotmail.com Edgewater,FL

My background is a little cloudy. All I really know for sure is that my father,Francis Xavier was originally from
Ireland then moved to Scotland and finally moved to Long Island in the late '50's early '60's.He had two brothers and five sisters.Only one of his brothers stayed in Scotland. His family still resides in Glasgow but he died in the 70's.The rest of my father's family live on Long Island with the exception of his brother who works for KLM and resides in San Francisco. If any of this sounds familiar write back or keep checking as I'm currently doing some research into my dad's family and will post the pertinent stuff here.

Jim, thanks for stopping in again - I believe I've meet a number of your LI relatives on the site so far. It's amazing how many requests there's been regarding McGoverns from Scotland! _________________________________________________________

Karen & Kerry McGovern

K.McGovern@bigfoot.com New Zealand

Well hi there Frank.

It sounds like a wonderful idea to us. We too would be keen to view other McGovern's and once I dig out the photo albums (and find a photo that isn't too horrendous) I'll send it in.

I'm Karen by the way and my husband is Kerry, and I normally get the job of typing messages as Kerry is all thumbs on the keyboard. We are obviously from New Zealand (I always tell Kerry that his family was probably banished here as there appears to be a few shady characters in the bunch), and we'd like to dig a bit deeper into the history of the family. Is that wise I have to wonder? As I willingly married into the family though, they can't be all bad.

We're just an average couple, Kerry is a builder although prefers to do rigging/scaffolding work as it's a little easier on the body and I work in a chartered accountants office doing computer work. Kerry is sports mad although only plays bowls and golf now as he's past the age where he can play rugby league. His family worked with horses (training and riding) so he is also a keen racing fan (although not as much as he would probably like to be).

His brother Shane is currently training horses in Japan, his sister Lee now lives in Taree (Australia) where she runs a garage, another sister Sharlene lives almost at the top of the north island of New Zealand where her and her husband own a couple of video outlets. You may hear from Sharlene & Craig as they too are on the net and I'm sure that Sharlene knows a lot more of the family history than I do. I will pick Kerry's brain though and see what he can come up with if that interest you at all.

Anyway, this was just a brief rundown on ourselves so please feel free to write back if you want too.

I'll keep on eye on the site for any future developments, and thank you for initiating the site.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the e-mail, what a great idea! I didn't realise there were so many of us about.....

I used to live in East Kent where there were only about 5 in the whole phone book, where I live now in Berkshire, there are a few more.

It would be nice to go back a generation or two, and then see if I have any other distant cousins I never knew of..... Let me know if you need any input. PS Whereabouts in the world are you?

I am in the UK.

Steven, good to hear from you - by all means give me some more input

Bettye Kent McGovern

(Mrs. Clinton Gale McGovern) cgmcgovern@worldnet.att.net El Dorado Hills, CA

Dear Frank,

You are certainly ambitious to start on such a project. I am married to a McGovern, so I am interested in your history sources. For example, what is CavanNet? Could we read the entire story? Other bibliographies?

This just may tie into your family name SUMMER: My husband's grandfather was his first ancestor to emigrate from Killeshandra, Co. Cavan in 1860, age 12. His full name was Peter Sumner McGovern. Now I wonder if his middle name wasn't misspelled by the immigration authorities. It might well be that he was named both Summer and McGovern.

Peter homesteaded in Firesteel Creek, Aurora Co., South Dakota. There are no other McGoverns left there, but Sen. George McGovern, although not known to be related, is from Mitchell near Plankinton where my husband was born. And the older he gets the more Sen. Geo resembles my father-in-law--it's downright spooky.

I look forward to your further info via the net. We all appreciate your efforts.

Drew McGovern

mcgovern@worldchat.com Toronto, Ontario Canada

Thanks for writing me. Sorry for not getting back sooner but I was on vacation and I have been a little busy since getting back. I am interested in any information concerning our family name. I also have spent a little time in the last few years researching my roots.

I should give you a little background about myself. Born in Scotland, emigrated to Canada at age 22 and have lived here for 23 years. Am married with 3 kids and I live near Toronto, Ontario.

The McGoverns originally come from Enniskillen, Ireland and I have a good account of my great grandfather leaving Ireland around 1880 to Glasgow, Scotland as a young man under unusual circumstances. I can give you more details if you are interested.

Drew - please do! I am interested!

Steven McGovern

stevenmcgovern@enterprise.net Wokingham, UK

I am pleased to hear that, there are not that many of us in England, in fact I only know of one other McGovern family, through work.

I am 32, my father is 54. My paternal great grandfather came from Ireland I believe, and came from a large family. I can't believe that I am the only descendant, and I would like to think about tracing back a family tree, but never seem to have enough hours in the day. One day I would like to go to Ireland to see where I came from.....

Can you imagineorganising a reunion of some kind, that would be like something out of Monty Python!

Great idea, keep me in touch with developments!!

Hmmmm? A reunion sounds good! Any McGovern's out there with a huge piece of property for McGovernstock '99 or 2000?

Warren A. McGovern

wam@math.ufl.edu

Thank you for your e-mail asking me about McGovern's. None of the names you mentioned ring a bell, but I have forwarded the e-mail to my dad. A few years ago we had a discussion about our family tree and he has tons of information on the subject. As far as we know, we have only been able to trace our family back to the boat which travelled from Ireland to America in the mid-to-late 17th century. It was called the "Princess". Soon after the family moved to Iowa and have been there pretty much since then.

Maybe my dad will know a bit more. I'll let you know.

Edward McGovern

bross3@postoffice.ptd.net

Thanks for the help, I'll check the site you suggested. I seem to have a unique problem tracing my family history on my fathers side, I can only track 2 generations, after that the records seem almost non-existent. My grandparents moved around frequently, as well as my great-grandparents. It's hard to pin-point places of birth, vital statistics isn't forth-coming and the courthouse has only limited records! But, I'm going to give it a go anyway!

I really enjoyed your site, it was informative and entertaining! It's nice to hear from more of the seth. There was once a McGovern Family news letter, I'll dig up the information and send it to you if you haven't already seen it. It had some interesting history and statistics.

It also mentioned family reunions! Thanks again, may the road rise to meet you...

Your friend,

Ed

Ed, I would love to see a copy of this newsletter - I've never heard of it - that’s why I started this

Phil McGovern

I noticed that the message from Karen of Boston refers to Walshy's. My ancestors from Tullytrasna, Cavan were Walshy McGoverns. While visiting a relative, I asked what the name referred to - he wasn't sure but thought it might have been the maiden name of someone's wife.

My Great-Grandfather Phil McGovern (Walshy) was born in Tullytrasna, married and lived in Drumarigna Leitrim. I have been researching this branch and found that one of the Walshy's was a survivor of the Titanic. Mary McGovern.

Slowly, I am discovering and making connections. If anyone out there has anything additional on Mary or on the Walshy's for that matter, please contact. I have quite a bit of information on other ancestors also. I was lucky enough to have a grand-uncle write down from memory a lot of the names of relatives. Which has been quite helpful at times making links to other information.

Phil, I wish you the best in your search!

FRANCIS MCGOVERN

FRANK-MAC@worldnet.att.net Boston, MASS

This is just a note from Frank and Mary McGovern who both are interested in learning more about our family history.

We are brother and sister and our father was born in America. However, his father Lawrence Francis McGovern was born in Athlone, Ireland on Christmas Eve in 1854.His parents names were Lawrence F. McGovern and Mary Lennon. They were farmers . Our grandfather came to America when he was 18 and worked at his trade as a confectioner which he learned in Ireland.

It was very encouraging to hear that you are tracking down information about the family name. We will watch the web site when it is available.

Lots of luck and keep up the good work,

If anyone has information about the McGoverns in Athlone, we would be happy to know about it.

Frank and Mary - there is Lawrence McGovern of the UK who visits this site - look for his message and email address here on this page - he might be the missing link to your search!

Yes Owen is really big in our family. yes I saw what I think is my grandfather's baptismal record, 1862 and I always heard him referred to as Owen, but in the record, it's Eugene. Are you the one who started the site????

It seems the name Eugene and Owen are the same - my great uncle and brother were/are Terrence Owen, my dad was Donald Eugene

Frank,

Thanks for the McGovern Clan Site! It's a great idea and I'm enjoying reading about other McGoverns. My father Lt. Colonel Joseph McGovern was from the Cleveland Ohio area and he spent a career as a pilot in the USAF. He lives in Universal City, a suburb of San Antonio Texas. Four McGovern boys came from his marriage to Yolanda Daloisio also from Cleveland....Joe Jr. ...Mike....Danny....and Tom.

As for me...I spent the last 13 years as a college basketball coach in Kansas and Florida.....I'm now working as an executive recruiter in beautiful Charlotte North Carolina. My wife Connie and I have an 8 year old boy named Marcus.

Again, Frank.....thanks for creating this and I will try to contribute when I can.

God Bless,

Dan

Dan, thanks for the kind words. Basketball! Love the game - wish I could still play it! Thanks so much for the info. My mom Mary McGovern is a transplanted fellow North Carolinian of yours in Durham. Keep in touch

I live in Huntington Village. And I am of the sod McGovern's (one of many cousins). My great-grandfather started the business in Brooklyn before the turn of the century.

Somewhere in my boxes of photos I have a picture of him (James E. McGovern Sr.). When I find it, I will send a copy to you for posting. I think this was a great idea, Frank. Continued success.

Yes Tim - please do send the picture. I look forward to it. If your ever in Kings Park stop in and say hi!

Hi Frank just a wee word of thanks as you know Karen and I got to talk and would you believe I had an uncle who was reared very close to where she lives in the U.S. I was able to send a copy of my grandfathers birth and death certificate to Karen [the name on the certificate dated 1878 is spelled the old Irish way]. My it's a small world don't you think?

I am very happy Sam - this is part of what the site is all about! Cheers!

Ryan McGovern ryanm@allsport.com Australia

My name is Ryan McGovern from Sydney Australia. I am very excited at the moment because on the 29th of June I am going to Ireland for the first time. The occasion is the wedding of my Fathers cousin, Anthony. I was thrilled to find this information on the web. Do you have any places of significant family history to visit while I am there?

I am looking forward to drinking real Guiness.

Ryan, have yourself a grand time! Give the best to Anthony and the blushing bride from all of us in the Clan. Prosperity and hapiness to Anthony and the soon to be missus! And have a Guiness for me too!

Phil McGovern

McIRISH@aol.com

I wrote a short bit ago and wanted to follow up. I am interested in hearing about anything you might know of the knickname "Walshy". Karen McGovern of Boston replied to my e-mail concerning the same - she didn't.

I am a Walshy because of my great-grandfather who was born in Tullytrasna, Cavan. I thought if you had any more thoughts on the subject, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Take care,

Phil

Phil - hope you can find other Walshys - So far I've heard from the Huns and Lighfoots! All from the same area.

Peter McGovern

Love reading your site

Haven't yet found any direct relationship with my family though. We arrived in Australia in 1961, but we're from Scotland (Edinburgh). I guess originally from Ireland with such a name. I have done some work on family history...but only 3-4 generations. Wish I had more info. Some of the Edinburgh McGoverns now in Canada. Funny...a lot of the Christian names I read at your site are also in our family...James, Mary etc. But I guess they were common Scottish/Irish names.

If you have any ideas on the Scottish side I would appreciate it. Or if my humble research can be of any value I would be happy to provide it.

Peter, we've heard from a lot of Scots McGoverns - both still living in Scotland, Canada and the US - check out this notes and I think you will strike paydirt!

"I am Anne McGovern Noonan, originally from Brighton, Mass. The daughter of Terence F. McGovern from "Swad" Swanlinbar, County Cavan. His parents were Patrick and Mary McGoldrick. My father's family were know as "The Lightfoots". There were 7 children in his family. He was the youngest. He came to the U. S. in 1929. James McGovern from Allston, Mass. was his oldest brother. Bridget "Bertha" McGovern Diskin, next in line, lived in Waltham, Mass. In Ireland he had 2 brothers, Patrick, who was a postman in "Swad", and Joseph in Belfast married to Ann McGovern(maiden name McGovern). His 2 other sisters were Mary Ann McGovern Smyth in Belfast and Katie McGovern in Swanlinbar. I am related to Karen McGovern, I think second or third cousin. We would be interested in knowing more about our family."

Ann, you must also be related to Sam then - your family is growing by leaps and bounds!

Great genealogy source. We can trace McGoverns only to our grandparents from Swanlinbar. The family is interested in finding more relations. My father was Terence F. Karen is a relation--second cousin, we think. Great page-wonderful idea. Thanks."

So Mary - are you Ann's sister? Thanks for writing!

Fantastic cousin Frank...The way the story seems to go from this offshoot, is that 3 brothers came from Co. Cavan and settled in the Boston area in the mid 1700's I believe. There is also the matter of the Hendy's who are also tied into the McGovern line. I traced one of them, Richard Hendy, in the parish registers to a ship the coast Frigate on June 1st 1679. That’s all good and well, yet I am at a loss as to the first McG to set foot. My gr.gr.granfather James Patrick McGovern married Mabel Pollard from Glensfalls NY. area. There is a Welsh connection involved here as well. Anyway, I continue to search, as I hope we all do. Hello to all us McGovern’s. I'll post soon."

Frank; I am not sure how to enter a family history note, so I will let you post it. Hope it is interesting to some of your McGovern fans. The McGovern ancestors I have researched came from County Cavan and lived near Roslea, County

Fermanagh. At least three brothers, Patrick (b 1816), Joseph (b 1818), and James (b. 1826) came to the US during the famine years (ca. 1848). They were all sons of Jack McGovern (who had eight children), a member of the Irish Rebel Group who later joined the British Army (ca. 1799). These brothers settled first in Illinois near Galesburg. James' family populated Knox County pretty well. Joseph's family scattered a bit with his eldest son, Thomas, going eventually to Iowa with his family. I have tried to track Thomas' children, but have only tracked one, Joseph C. McGovern, to living descendants. I have tracked almost all of James McGovern's descendants. I have met many delightful McGoverns in the process. Hope this is helpful. Cheers, Andy."

"Hi. It's great to see the McGovern Clan sharing information and our family history around the world. My name is Shelalagh McGovern and I live in Sydney, Australia. I have yet to meet many McGoverns here in Oz, so this network is really fantastic. I look forward to reading all the McGovern-news from around the globe."
