I

1.   Every hostel in his homeland (?) is a banquet hall; 'tis a
proud' boast to tell of his castle, the house wherein on every yellow goblet is much gold surrounding each bright gem.

2.   Numerous are the gold cups as I watch them being used for drinking and being passed round in the strong compact
stout castle; many the cabinet and the horn.

3.   The goblets of the castle when piled up in round heap -
I shall never know of any glory (like it)!; the back of
(each of) the warriors like a curving ship-prow leans against
the white hazel-wood wall as he drinks.

4.   The noble bright-cheeke4 company round Brian of the
B6inn set the castle in order; numerous are they as they
surround the Greek griffin-prince clothed in choice green
cloth.

5.   Many the nobles (in the hall) down to the portal whose
surface is smooth as chiselled wood, many the graceful
bodied youths within, a revelry as of the Greeks being
enjoyed by those youths.

6.   Plentiful the satin on the castle-wall - I cannot gaze on it
long enough! - and the heavy tapestries piled on each other,
fresh and green and bright.

7.   Many the green shields and war weapons hanging up over
the Raven of Cluain who has such graceful galleys; many
the bridle and bright javelin and blue spear and hafted
dagger on the arm-rack.

8.   In his tall castle many the gold-linked leash on bright-
coated fierce hound; many the blue helmet fixed over
mail-coat, many the brown cloak over tunic.

9.   The satin-clad bard sits by the gold-ribbed portal, and on
his fair massive head of hair is a shining sparkling diadem.

10. (There are) folk chanting praise of the curly fair-tressed
bright hero with his blue-bladed looped (?) spears, Mag
Shamhradhain, Brian of the drinking-horns, goodly king
of Eire's chessmen.
