PRESENT
PERSONALITIES
Seamus Dolan (a friend of this writer) whose mother is a native
of this parish. He is a national schoolteacher and is involved
in politics. He has held the position of Cathaoirleach of the
Seanad (head of the Irish senate).
U.S. Senator George McGovern. The local people claim that the
senator has connections with Glangevlin--his ancestors are supposed
to have emigrated from Curraghglass. His grandfather attended
the Carrick School.
All of the foregoing was excerpted by the writer from that interesting
little booklet, THE KINGDOM OF GLAN, put out by members of the
Glangevlin Guild, I.C.A., in 1983.
There probably are many other noteworthy McGoverns who should
be added to this list, though it is not known whether their people
came from the Glan or elsewhere in Ireland. Perhaps the Glan people
could check.
Certainly the architect and McGovern Historian, Joseph Henry McGovern
would deserve to be on the list as would his brother, the Rev.
J. B. McGovern who researched and wrote much about the McGoverns.
Movie star Pat O'Brien's mother was a McGovern. Maureen McGovern
is a famous American singer. Elizabeth McGovern is an American
movie star, James B. McGovern, nickanmed "Earthquake McGoon",
a famous U.S. Army Air Force combat pilot in Burma and China during
WW II came from New Jersey. Thomas T. McGovern from St. Paul,
Minnesota was named among the best jazz pianists in the U.S. in
the 1930's.
There may be many other notable McGoverns that history has failed
note but all living and dead may take comfort in the small poem
of O'Dugan in 1372: Magh Samhradain Snaidhu go neart Air Theallach
Eachaidh oir dheire Mac Guaran, the Mainstay of Strength (still)
Rules over the noble Tullaghaw
