The Magaurans were an intellectual race.  In the 13th century we had the Bardic Schools at the foot of Cuilceach.  In the 18th century Aodh Mac Gabhrain wrote a famous poem called 'Plearacha na Ruaireach’ which was translated into English by Dean Swift.  This Aodh (Hugh) may be the friend whom O'Carolan (the last of the wandering bards) mentions.  Thomas MaGauran (1803-1843) who was a poet wrote in praise of the Magaurans who were his patrons.

In this present century local people composed songs two of which are:

BALLINAGLERA AND GLAN, Air: 'The Men of the West.’

We are proud of the deeds of our fathers

Who are lying at rest in their clay.

They left us full farms and homesteads,

The evictors they drove them away.

The tyrants they made them go easy,

Subduing the crow bar and can.

Because there was plenty of courage,

             In Ballimaglera and Glan.

Chorus

Hurrah for the boys of old  ‘Glera

Three cheers for each jolly Glan man

Who never knew yet what defeat was

              In Ballinaglera and Glan.

Our mountains gave birth to the Shannon

Which down through its valleys does plough

It spreads out white waves in Lough Allen
