Of Brian's twenty-four sons (?), the youngest, Duach (or Dui) was his especial favorite and this Duach held the scepter for nineteen years...until he was slain in battle under the Curlieu Mountains.

This Duach Galach, from whom the McGoverns came, was a contemporary of St. Patrick and it was he who gave land near Ballinasloe to the Apostle's disciple, St. Grellan, for the monastery, which became the ecclesiastical capital of Ui-Maine- (O'Kelly's country).

With one exception, the sons of Brian, it is said, received baptism from St. Patrick and
aided his evangelizing labors to the west.  To Duach Galach belongs the distinction of having been the first Christian king.

As noted before, the Ui-Briun were probably in direct lineage from the Milesians, or sons of Mil, The Celtic tribe, which originally came from Sycthia.

HOW THE MCGOVERNS GOT TO TULLYHAW

The McGovern, Magauran, MacGovern clan, then, came from one Eochaid Muighmedhoin,

(pronounced Ochy Moyvane!) and he in turn came from Cormac Mac Airt and then back to Conn.

An ancient legend says, when Patrick first met this clan of the Ui-Briuin tribe as they were known, he questioned one Eithen, who at that time was their king. Eithen (in an attempt to disguise himself) took a weaver's beam with its rods on his back when he saw Patrick.

'Are you Eithen’ said Patrick. ‘Indeed, I am not,’ said Eithen.  ‘May you not be then,’ said Patrick, ‘and may no son or grandson of yours be king.’

And that is what all the other sons said down to the youngest-- Duach Galach.  He said, "If I were king I would do Patrick's will." Patrick then said, "You and your see after you shall be kings on account of obeying Patrick”, and that was fulfilled.

It is said that then all the brothers yielded to Duach and it is he who assumed high-kingship over them.

And Patrick blessed him at Duma Shealga and promised kingship to his descendants forever.   The long lineage of Duach Galach will be included in an appendix to this work, but in short the McGoverns came by this route:

Samhradhan back to Fergna to Muirdhach to Eoghan Sremh to Duach Galach to Brian to Eochaidh Muighmedhon to Tirech Muireadhach to Fiachu Sraibtine to.Cairhre Lifechair to Cormac Mac Airt to  Art Aenfer to Conn Ceadchathach, the High King of all Ireland--and then to the Milesians of Indo-Europe.
