This is part of my side of the McGoverns. Only thing, I am in the fourth generation and My mothers maiden name is wrong , I have written to Kendra and she will correct. This is the Francis X. that built the churches, I spoke to you about. One of the churches he built is still in use in Taswell In. The lady who put this up and I are 3rd Cousins never have met and we have 3 more generations to add to the list. I am Charles Mc Governs daughter, he also had a sister I was named for. _____________________________________________________________________

My name is Jill McMahon and I live in PA. My mother and I have been trying to get more information on our family. My grandmother's maiden name is Mary Jane McGovern from New York. (Schnectady or Troy). She married my grandfather John Prout and had 4 children. Susan, Nancy, John and Linda. I don't know to much about my great grandmother but if you have any information that would help. My great grandmother's maiden name was O'Brien. __________________________________________________________________

From: John McGovern jf@mcgov37.freeserve.co.uk

I came across your McGovern site last night and I was very impressed by it all. It was also useful as I have been tracing my branch of the McGovern family and one of my second cousins had posted a message to your site. I have been able to answer most of his questions and he will, hopefully, answer some of mine. So you are doing a great service.

First a little background. I have traced our branch back to 1803 in Leitrim. My Great-great grandfather was a John McGovern. He lived at Mullagharve, Aughacastle, Co.Leitrim, Ireland and he was married to Rose-Ellen Stretton. He was born in 1803 and died in 1891. They had three children Michael, Mary and Hugh. I believe he was also a District Councillor, as was Hugh later on. I want to see if I can take the line back further and I was hoping you could post this on your site to see if anyone had anymore information. I have traced the line from John down and there are descendants in Ireland, England and America. If anyone wants any information about them they can e-mail me and I'll see what I can do. It would be too bulky to print all the data here. Also it has not all been verified yet. When it has I will post to your tree if I can.
It is wonderful to be a McGovern.

At the back of McLysaght's book on Irish surnames there is a pronunciation guide for the somewhat inscrutable names. If you like I'll send the celtic letter groups to you and you can see where McGovern comes from the original spelling.

Incidentally, we have been to Cavan, Leitrim and Fermanagh - saw Ballymcgauran and the lake Mcgauran. Our pictures were taken at twilight so I 'm hoping we can doctor them up for presentation.

Hope this helps ... let me know if you want the above information. _____________________________________________

My name is Meghan McGovern. I saw your web site and I loved it. Can you list me under the U.S. McGoverns? Right now, I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan where I attend graduate school at the University of Michigan.

My homepage is listed at the end of this email.

My grandfather, Thomas Patrick McGovern (1905-1986), came from County Cavan in 1921. He settled in New Jersey and had 2 childern. My little sister has visited our relatives in Ireland; someday I plan to do the same.

I know little about my family's history in Ireland, and your site was just wonderful. Thanks so much. ___________________________________________

I have an article (source unknown) which a cousin passed on to me. It's
titled "Ghastly stabbing fatality in 1888 - Glangelvin farmers quarrel
on return from fair". The article is about the violent (though at times amusingly
reported)death of Thomas McGovern from Swanlinbar. Various McGoverns are
mentioned in the article including a Terry, Patrick and Bartley.

Ellen, Thanks so much, I am anxiously awaiting the article. It will appear on the site.

As a native of the 'Kingdom of Glan' I'm delighted to see that the McGovern name is
alive and well outside of the ancestral homelands. If any of you are considering a visit let me say that the scenery around the Cuilcagh Mountains and along the shores of Lough McNean is simply magnificent. The "Cavan Way" (scenic walk), the Shannon Pot and the Marble Arch Caves are breathtakingly beautiful. Let me add that it is only by visiting that you will find out why we are all "stone mad" in West Cavan!

Thanks Doctor McGovern, in the case of my family, myself included the stone madness is alive and well in the US too!

The way the story seems to go from this offshoot, is that 3 brothers came from Co. Cavan and settled in the Boston area in the mid 1700's I believe. There is also the matter of the Hendy's who are also tied into the McGovern line. I traced one of them, Richard Hendy, in the parish registers to a ship the coast Frigate on June 1st 1679. Thats all good and well, yet I am at a loss as to the first McG to set foot. My gr.gr.granfather James Patrick McGovern married Mabel Pollard from Glensfalls NY. area. There is a Welsh connection involved here as well. Anyways, I continue to search, as I hope we all do. Hello to all us McGovern. I'll post soon.

Thanks for the tip on the Gedcom to HTML converter Matt - I will look into it. Pollard? Hmm I believe the actor Michael J. Pollard hails from upstate - a relation? __________________________________________________________

I am orignally from Scotland but have lived in Canada for the last 23 years. Interesting stuff.....My great grandfather, Bartholomew McGovern and his fiancee Margaret McLaughlan eloped from Ireland to Glasgow, Scotland around 1880 where they married, had four children and eventually died. I heve always been told they were from the
Enniskillen area and the name Bartholomew has been in the family for a long time. I am looking for any information regarding my search. ____________________________________________________________

I think the idea of a McGovern site is great! My great grandfather, James E. McGovern, arrived from County Caven in 1880, settling in Brooklyn,NY at the age of 16. I have some details of our branch of the family geneology that I would love to share. I will forward it in future e-mails. Also, we will be visiting Ireland in June, 1998 and would love some advise on where to stop on our "family history" trip.

Frank,
When I wrote to you earlier this week, I was impatiently waiting to hear back
from a man named Sam McGovern. He called me last night and we had a nice talk.
We are both very excited to find each other. He said that in fact you suggested
to him that he contact me.

We are in fact second cousins, our great grand father was Owen McGovern, his
nickname, Oiney (Iknee) Viddie,

My father remembers his father And his father talks about my grandfather, the
postman, nicknamed "The Hun."

Excellent news Karen! I'm glad the site helped you guys get acquainted!

This is just a note from who both are interested inlearning more about our family history.
We are brother and sister and our father was born in America. However, his father Lawrence Francis McGovern was born in Athlone, Ireland on Christmas Eve in 1854.His parents names were Lawrence F. McGovern and Mary Lennon. They were farmers . Our grandfather came to America when he was 18 and worked t his trade as a confectioner which he learned in Ireland.

If anyone has information about the McGoverns in Athlone, we would be happy
to know about it.

_______________________________________________________________________

Apparently so many McGoverns in Cavan had the same first names that each family was given a nickname to identify them. Karen McGovern of Boston was kind enough to answer my request to send us some info on the nickname practice. Thanks Karen!

Karen McGovern - Boston, Mass. karen.mcgovern@umb.edu

As for the nicknames, they are funny and our is unusual. The most common nicknames are based on the father and the father's father, since every one is McGovern they use the first names. Some of my favorites are Mick Micky Einey(sp?), nowI will tell you that the man's name is Michael and his father was Michael and his grandfather was probably Owen. Paddy Judy is a man who we know who lives in Glan, i'm not sure what his father's name was, I will try to ask my father. They all know each other and by the nicknames.
As for Walshy, that would be a different kindof nickname. We are not completely sure how my Grandfather got to be called the Hun. My father thought is was because he was pro-German at some point, which I 'm not sure if that is true or not,but one of my uncles thinks it came from a customer on his postal route who used to call him Hun, as a term of endearment, as in Honey.

My grandmother Mary McGovern and her brother James came to the States from Ontario Canada sometime in the late 1800's. They left their parents and other brothers and sisters in Kemptville, Ontario. The parents names were James and Margaret McGovern. The other brothers and sisters names were Patrick, Owen, Julia and Catherine. I believe at least one of them came to the States too and settled in New York. I have lost all information on these other brothers and sisters. could you mention it to someone for me, or ifyou put out a publication. I would greatly appreciate it if you would. I do know that one of the parents came from Petigo, Northern Ireland.

Andy Kirby Virginia andrewfk@worldnet.att.net

The Mcgovern ancestors I have researched came from County Cavan and lived near Roslea, County
Fermanagh. At least three brothers, Patrick (b 1816), Joseph (b 1818), and James (b. 1826) came to the US during the famine years (ca. 1848). They were all sons of Jack McGovern (who had eight children), a member of the Irish Rebel Group who later joined the British Army (ca. 1799). These brothers settled first in Illinois near Galesburg. James' family populated Knox County pretty well. Joseph's family scattered a bit with his eldest son, Thomas, going eventually to Iowa with his family. I have tried to track Thomas' children, but have only tracked one, Joseph C. McGovern, to living decendants. I have tracked almost all of James McGovern's descendants. I have met many delightful McGoverns in the process. Hope this is helpful.

Cheers, Andy.

Thanks Andy - This is great information for some of us McG's! (Frank)

My branch of the McGovern family probably came into the US from Canada in the 1860s. at any rate, we arrived on the scene in Iowa in the 1880s, I suspect, via Minnesota I have McGoverns marrying other McGoverns several times and it is a real nightmare to attempt to figure out. They settled in the DesMoine area ( a lot of McGoverns there) and then headed down to Oklahoma in the 1890s. I am from Oklahoma. There is a great deal of McGovern info available at http://www.rootsweb. com~cotter/irish/mlm/ but I believe that most of this deals with the McGs who came in from Canada. Some of them did head east as I recall.
