Camp
McGovern – Bosnia
Charles McGovern
Mc Govern Online might be interested to know that there is a Camp
Mc Govern in Bosnia. The camp was dedicated in memory of my brother,
First Lieutenant Robert M. Mc Govern, a Congressional Medal of
Honor recipient, who was killed in action in Korea on January
30th 1951. Eleven days later, our brother Jerome (Silver Star)
was also killed in action in the same conflict. After a double
funeral at St. Gabriel's, our parish church, in Washington, DC
they were laid to rest side-by-side in Arlington National Cemetery.
Camp Mc Govern currently houses about 1,000 soldiers and civilians
whose mission is to conduct peace support operations in conjunction
with the Dayton Peace Accords and to help create a safe and stable
environment for the restoration of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The
camp has it's own bakery, post exchange, food court, coffee bar,
small movie theater, a gym with the latest workout equipment and
good food. Every VIP who visits Bosnia: generals, senators, governors,
ambassadors and the President of the United States have passed
through Camp Mc Govern.
The
soldiers patrol the town to insure the peace and have assisted
in the rebuilding of destroyed bridges, railroads, roads etc.
In their travels they have met many of the local children and
found them lacking in much needed school supplies. The camp personnel
have been in receipt of such supplies from schools in the states
that they in turn distribute to the children.

Thank
you Charlie - I for one was unaware that there was a McGovern,
who had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. My uncle
Frank received the Bronze Star posthumously, he was killed in
the Battle of the Bulge.
It appears that more than a few McGovern's have made the ultimate
sacrifice for their country.
Fellow
McGovern's please see what you can do to help out the kids that
Camp McGovern is helping. I know from my nephew who served in
Bosnia that these kids have gone through hell.
